I like the illustrations and the concept. My kids were very exited about this book. Unfortunately as the other reviewers pointed out the materials are of low quality. You need tools to put the nuts and bolts together. The kids cannot do it themselves. One of the cardboard pieces tore within minutes of us opening the box. Great book---just use good quality materials in the next version.
Yes, a child trying to use this will probably have it torn apart very quickly. It is unfortunate it's not constructed entirely out of plastic (only the nults & bolts are plastic... they are used to hold the cardboard pieces on the cardboard pegboard ). I'm building the devices and reading it to my children. I let them use the device after I've contructed it. They really enjoy it. It is rather short though. I would love it if there was a website with more complicated designs or some designs that combine the mechanisms in the book. I fairly sure that if I were to let my kids loose on it to play and design something themselves it wouldn't last. It's definietly finicky putting together the machines. Having said that, I haven't seen anything else out there similar. You get a short explanation and a working example that kids can get hands on. I think it deserves 3.5 stars.

This product has excellent concept book has description of a simple machine and instructions how to make simple machines from the included gears, washers, bolts, nuts and levers. I wish the pieces were made from plastic instead of cardboard. It would demonstrated the movement better and the pieces wouldn't get stuck. Otherwise it's a great toy for kids who like building kits.
Affordable, using less expensive stuff. The parts are punched so you can pop them out of the book, and mount them right there. A fun way to learn.
